ESC’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The staff-owners of ESC Lab Sciences are committed to environmental stewardship. Successfully accomplishing responsible utilization of resources involved more than putting up signs and circulating memos. Action and perseverance on the part of management and staff who consider the environmental, or the E in ESC, to be an obligation led to responsible conservation, recycling and reuse becoming more and more a way of life on our campus. ESC is recognized nationally as a leader among testing laboratories in the practice of green initiatives.

Solvent Recovery
Buchi Syncore reduces solvent emission by reclaiming over 85% of the evaporated solvent released by the concentration process. The Buchi Syncore process lets ESC recycle dichloromethane, hexane, and acetone for use in manufacturing. Our goal is to improve solvent distillation and recovery process in order to produce solvents suitable for laboratory use.

Conservation
Electronic thermostats, motion-sensor lights/fans and waterless urinals help reduce energy and water consumption.

Converting fluorescent light fixtures from T-5 to T-8 has reduced energy and hazardous materials. The brighter T-8 bulbs frequently allow 4 bulb fixtures to be replaced with 2 bulbs.

ESC continuously provides incentive to sales staff to drive fuel efficient vehicles and requires a minimum average miles per gallon standard in order to receive automobile allowance.

ESC promotes telecommuting for selected analytical technical review and administrative staff where feasible. Telecommuting results in conservation of gasoline, electricity and materials used in construction of office environments.

Gas purchased in Bulk

ESC purchases gas in bulk – fewer replacements result in less waste.
GC Racer by Zip Scientific

GC Racer by Zip Scientific. Using the GC Racer system allows ESC to use significantly less energy per sample and to save time and money by decreasing run time and increasing sample throughput. It enables ESC to make fast GC possible with any capillary GC column.

Waste Reduction
ESC recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, batteries, mercury-containing lamps and bulbs, computer equipment; monitors, printers, toner cartridges and desk tops. We have opened our corporate recycling to our staff so they can bring in recyclables from home.

ESC offers “paperless” reporting. Technical staff are equipped with three computer screens allowing them to function using less paper.
